Week 19 - Mixed Metal Pendant - Randi/Dax58
Some silver, some copper, and a little brass.... yes - it's another one of my mixed metal pieces! This features textured silver with an etched copper disc, held together with a micro brass bolt. It's been dapped and antiqued, and buffed to a soft sheen.
Comments are always welcome... check out StudioDax for more about my teaching, My Jewelry Blog for more on my FSOJ projects, and My Website for more of my jewelry.
Thanks, Randi
Wnderful, Randi. I love the texture and mixed metals in this piece. It's so eyecatching!

Hi, Randi! Beautiful piece! Just curious if/how you finish a piece like this. Do you add anything like Ren Wax or Krylon to preserve the beautiful tones you've gotten? If not, how does a piece like this look after the copper darkens? Right now, the contrast between the dark and light areas is just perfect. I wonder if it would have the same 'wow' factor if allowed to patina naturally... I'd love to hear your thoughts/experiences.

Thanks folks - I appreciate your comments.
Ellen - I have never used any kind of preservation technique on my pieces. It may be because of where I live, but I haven't had an issue with dramatic color changes... the copper gets warmer tones, but thats about it. I should probably use something to seal it once it "warms" a bit, but I haven't done so with any of my pieces yet... I would use Ren Wax though. I've heard that the sprays or dips (lacquers) can flake off with wear, and I think the wax would wear more naturally. - Randi
